ABOUT
HYPNOSIS
The word ‘hypnosis’,
comes from the Greek word ‘Hypnos’ which translates
to sleep. It is a common misconception
that hypnosis is sleep, in fact it is quite the opposite,
more like a different state of mind where you are more
focused and aware.
The way I describe hypnosis is, ‘the
implementation of various techniques to bypass the conscious
mind, so I can directly access the sub-conscious mind
in order to implant suggestions or new habits and get
rid of unwanted habits’.
The conscious mind is the bit that
analyses and rationalises. It is logical and intellectual.
The sub-conscious mind will take on
board every positive suggestion and is creative and
imaginative. It is the part of the mind that controls
the body, memory and gives YOU your bad habits.
However, you will hear me talk about
it as ‘sleep’ as this is easier to understand
than me telling you to ‘go into a state of hypnotic
trance where you are more alert and focused on the sound
of my voice and the suggestions I give you, and where
nothing else matters’!!!
Hypnosis is quite easily one of the
least understood therapeutic tools in use. While most
people think of hypnosis as a way to make people cluck
like chickens at the click of a finger or strip off
when they hear a certain song, hypnosis can be a valuable
tool in helping people overcome fears, get rid of habits,
withstand pain, and even reduce stress in their lives.
Every thought, action and behaviour
is controlled by the mind and so since hypnosis can
be used to ‘re-programme’ the mind, the
unwanted thoughts, actions or behaviours can be removed
or replaced when hypnosis is used correctly.
You have undoubtedly heard endless
rumours about hypnosis, many of which are even believed
by most hypnotherapists but in my opinion are mainly
untrue.
Some people say ‘you can’t
hypnotize somebody who doesn’t want to be hypnotized
or you can’t hypnotize somebody who is drunk or
even that people with an IQ of under 65 cannot be hypnotized’.
Since it is safe to say that most
of my friends have the equivalent IQ to farm animals,
and I always hypnotize them after a few drinks….
and they NEVER want me to, the fact that I get them
‘under’ every time proves these and most
other rumours wrong!!
The best thing to do if you hear or
believe anything like that is to ask me or another good
hypnotist.
There are differences between hypnosis and hypnotherapy
and also of the beliefs of hypnotists and hypnotherapists.
Hypnosis is a more direct method to
access the sub-conscious mind; hypnotherapy generally
uses relaxation techniques to bore you half to death
for up to an hour before any change work even starts.
In my experience, hypnotherapists
are bound by beliefs and restraints in their own ability,
‘I can’t do this and I don’t know
about that’ and for some absurd reason have clients
lying down or sitting still, whereas hypnotists can
and will do whatever we put our minds to and wherever
we want to do it – pubs, cafes, train stations
etc.
Why pay for an hour of story time
by a hypnotherapist who doesn’t believe in his
or herself when you can pay a hypnotist to do the job
properly? I’m not saying that all hypnotherapists
can’t do their jobs, I am just quite often confused
by many behaviours and methods!
When I hypnotize you, you will be
totally relaxed and comfortable and you will hear everything
going on around you; you are just so focused on me and
my suggestions - everything else will become insignificant
unless it is important.
As part of my ‘wake-up’
procedure I also make you feel completely refreshed
and invigorated and feeling 10 times more confident
and better about yourself.
Any worries, concerns or anxiety about
hypnosis and what will happen are easily answered by
e-mail and quickly forgotten once we start!
